The Best of Tenerife: Canary Islands Mystical Journey

Tenerife: The Perfect Year-Round Holiday Destination in the Canary Islands
Tenerife, known as the “Island of Eternal Spring,” is a dream destination for travelers year-round. The poetic nickname perfectly describes the pleasant climate you’ll experience here.
More than just sunny beaches, ocean waves, and delicious cuisine, Tenerife offers stunning natural attractions and a unique laid-back vibe. Life on the island moves slowly and peacefully, making it an ideal escape from stress and a place to reconnect with yourself.
Useful Tips Before You Go
Tenerife is windy due to its location in the Atlantic Ocean, so pack a jacket for those breezy days. If you plan to explore the island’s many outdoor activities, bring sturdy hiking shoes for maximum comfort.
My Unique Trip to Tenerife
Unlike my usual trips, my Tenerife experience was quite different. Instead of focusing on the island’s famous landmarks, I explored its “energy points” in a journey that felt more mystical than touristy.
Following these energy points led me to iconic attractions and hidden gems steeped in history and legend. In this article, I’ll share the fascinating stories about Tenerife’s volcano, ancient tribes, plants, and even saints.
The First Inhabitants of Tenerife
One of the most intriguing aspects of Tenerife is the story of its first inhabitants. The Guanches, the island’s indigenous people, remained unknown until the Spanish conquest. Anthropologists believe they were Berber migrants from North Africa who arrived around 1000 BC.
This population lived in contact with nature and resided in natural caves in the Canary Islands. When they came into contact with the first Spanish settlers, they said that (according to them) “..the islands that formed the archipelago, in reality, were the remains of the mountain tops that were part of an ancient land submerged by water after a violent cataclysm”.
I found this story extremely fascinating and mysterious.
I have delved into the history of this civilization both on the island and online and I would like to point out this article which will retrace the history and tragic end of this people forgotten by our history books.

Must-See Attractions in Tenerife
Teide National Park
The iconic Mount Teide, a 3,718-meter active volcano, is the heart of this UNESCO World Heritage Site. It boasts incredible volcanic landscapes, lush pine forests, and hiking trails.
Ride the cable car for breathtaking views of Tenerife and neighboring islands. Open daily, except Mondays, from 9 AM to 2 PM and 3 PM to 6 PM.

Los Gigantes’ Cliffs
On Tenerife’s western coast lies Los Gigantes, a charming tourist spot famous for its towering cliffs, which rise between 500 and 850 meters above the ocean.
The cliffs provide a spectacular natural backdrop, and the nearby beach offers golden sands and crystal-clear waters.

Dragon Tree in Icod de los Vinos
The “Dracaena Draco,” located in Icod de los Vinos, is Tenerife’s oldest and most famous tree. Known as the “Millennial Dragon Tree,” it’s believed to be over 1,000 years old and is a symbol of the Canary Islands.
Legends say the tree’s red sap, called “dragon’s blood,” has mystical properties. Ancient people used it for medicine, dye, and even to ward off evil spirits.
Playa San Juan
A tranquil fishing village on Tenerife’s southwestern coast, Playa San Juan is a hidden gem. During my stay, I was mesmerized by the sound of waves and swaying palm trees.
Local restaurants serve fresh seafood, and boat tours to Los Gigantes can be booked at the harbor.

Playa de Las Américas
This popular tourist hub is known for its vibrant nightlife, natural and artificial beaches, and lively atmosphere. It’s the go-to spot for those seeking fun-filled vacations with endless entertainment options.
Candelaria
Located in northeast Tenerife, this coastal town is home to the Basilica of Our Lady of Candelaria, the patron saint of the Canary Islands.
Statues of nine Guanche kings stand along the waterfront, guarding visitors as they snap photos. According to tradition, tourists should silently share a wish with their chosen king for it to be granted.

La Orotava
Nestled in northern Tenerife, La Orotava is one of the oldest towns in the Canary Islands. With its charming 17th-century mansions and cobblestone streets, it’s a must-see for history enthusiasts.

Taste the typical Papas Arrugadas
The last thing I recommend: Taste the “papas arrugadas” always accompanied by mojo verde and mojo rojo (dips). These are round potatoes, boiled with their skin on, hence their name arrugadas, or “wrinkled”.
Even though you might think they look like stones, they are actually very good and very common, they will surely be served in every restaurant or kiosk in Tenerife as an aperitif or as a side dish.
