During Charlemagne’s siege, which lasted five years, resources in the city ran low, leaving only a sack of grain and a pig. Madame Carcas devised a clever plan to deceive the enemy. She fed the entire sack of grain to the pig and then threw the overfed animal from the city walls. The pig burst upon hitting the ground, leading Charlemagne to believe the city had abundant food supplies. Convinced they could not win, he lifted the siege.

To celebrate her victory, Madame Carcas ordered the bells of the city to ring. When Charlemagne’s soldiers heard the sound, one remarked, “Carcas sonne,” which translates to “Carcas rings.” Thus, according to the legend, the name Carcassonne was born.

Although the story contains historical inaccuracies, you can see a statue of Madame Carcas at the entrance to the medieval city today.
