Dozza Imolese, the painted village near Bologna

Are you looking for a nice place for a great Sunday lunch and a relaxing walk? If you don’t want to go too far from Bologna, I recommend Dozza Imolese.
Dozza Imolese is a small town in the Bologna area, with about a thousand inhabitants. Ok, but what makes Dozza so special?
In this post we will find out!
It is located between the plain and the first hills of Imola, right on the border between Emilia and Romagna. It is 8 km from Imola, 34 from Bologna and is listed among the most beautiful villages in Italy.
Dozza lacks nothing. History, art, wine and gastronomy. Everything that I personally look for in a day trip.
COSA TROVERAI IN QUESTO POST:
The painted village of Dozza
Dozza is a perfectly preserved medieval village, and is famous for having become a true open-air art gallery.
While you are walking through the streets you will surely notice the colorful murals on most of the houses, this peculiarity makes the small village a wonderful place to be discovered.
The murals represent the most varied images, scenes of everyday life, fantastic creatures, common objects that integrate perfectly with the architecture of the houses and the surrounding environment.
Walking through these streets is a continuous surprise.
During Christmas Dozza is even more suggestive, in fact various nativity scenes are set up on the windowsills and the village is decorated for the holidays with sparkling lights.
A day discovering Dozza is truly relaxing, despite its unique beauty, it is never stormed by groups of tourists that would make the experience more chaotic.

What to see in Dozza and the origin of its murals
In 1960, the Pro Loco of Dozza decided to ‘create’ the Biennale del Muro Dipinto. This event called on artists to paint directly on the walls of houses in front of spectators.
Since then, more or less famous artists have increasingly enriched the collection and now we can enjoy more than 200 works of art!!!!
Dozza Castle
The Rocca Sforzesca dominates the town from its highest hill and is surrounded by ancient walls. It was built in the 13th century, as a medieval fortress, and was then redesigned and completely renovated by Caterina Sforza who transformed it into a Renaissance palace.
From the towers of the Rocca you can enjoy a magnificent panoramic view of the Bologna hills and its rural landscapes. I assure you that the sunset from up here is truly special!
On the ground floor of the Castle is the Enoteca Regionale Emilia-Romagna. In this wine shop you can taste the typical food and wine of the Bologna area, tapping wine directly from the dispensers, but also honey and jams by purchasing a prepaid card.

Eating in Dozza
Dozza is also one of my favorite gastronomic destinations, there are in fact some traditional taverns, one of all that I recommend you try is the Bottega Ristorante e Vineria. It’s a truly recommended stop for a lunch or dinner to remember.
