Discover Burano, the colorful island of Venice

by 10, Dec, 2019Italy, Veneto

Burano is the cherry on top of Venice. If you’re looking for a bit of romance and want to be enchanted, visit this island with its colorful houses and landscapes straight out of a poem.

While Murano is known for its famous glass workshops, Burano is famous for lace and its brightly colored houses. You’ve probably seen pictures of them. In real life, they’re even more beautiful. In summer, the colors shine in the sun, and in winter, they bring cheer even when it rains.
I visited this village on November 23rd, during a rainy weekend with high tide in Venice. When I arrived in Burano, the colorful houses immediately brightened my day.

How to get to Burano

Vaporetto Line 12 departs from Fondamente Nove (north coast of Venice), taking you to Murano Faro, Torcello, Mazzorbo, and Burano. The service runs every day from 4:20 AM to around midnight. The journey is comfortable and takes 45 minutes. A single ticket costs 7.50 EUR and is valid for 75 minutes.

For a weekend trip around Venice and its surroundings, I recommend saving money by buying a 2- or 3-day tourist pass upon arrival, which costs 30 or 40 EUR. This will give you unlimited access to all vaporetto services.
For current rates, visit the official ACTV website.

What to see in Burano among the colorful houses

Wander through the narrow streets

Walking through the narrow streets of the island is an experience like no other. The Three Bridges area is stunning, with colorful houses and shops, and boats docked in the narrow canals.

Bepi Suà’s house

In the past, the town decided the colors of the houses, but today, residents choose their own colors. Bepi, a candy vendor, decided one day that his house should be the most colorful of all, so he painted it in a rainbow of colors. His house stands out in a beautiful way, adding even more charm to the area. More info here.

The Lace Museum

For 6.50 EUR, the Lace Museum gives you a look at the history of lace-making. On the upper floor, you can see real masterpieces from past centuries, displayed in wooden drawers you can open and close.

Church of San Martino and the Leaning Bell Tower

The small church overlooks the canal, making it even more picturesque. Behind the façade, you’ll notice the leaning bell tower. Inside, you can see Tiepolo’s painting of the “Crucifixion.”

The Leaning Bell Tower is a unique attraction visible from all over the island, especially when you circumnavigate the island by boat. It leans and reminds you of the Leaning Tower of Pisa. The closer you get, the more you notice its tilt. It definitely adds that fairytale touch to Burano.

Mazzorbo

Cross the wooden bridge to Mazzorbo Island, which offers a beautiful view of Burano’s colorful houses. If you love fine dining, you’ll find the Michelin-starred restaurant “Venissa,” which is also a wine resort and hotel.

Try the Bussolà Buranelli

Made with butter, sugar, eggs, and flour, these large donuts are often decorated with chocolate chips, sugar, or coconut. They’re perfect to nibble on while walking through the colorful houses of Burano. They’re great for breakfast, dipped in milk, or after a meal with passito wine.
