One Day in Modena, Top Attractions in town

One day in Modena might seem like it’s all about balsamic vinegar, Ferrari, and Lamborghini, but this city has so much more to offer. In the heart of Modena, you’ll find stunning architecture and historical sites that will captivate you.
Just 30 minutes from Bologna, Modena pleasantly surprised me on my first visit. Despite the historic rivalry between the two cities, I enjoyed a relaxing day wandering through the center and savoring the local cuisine.
The train station is close to the city center, and a ticket from Bologna costs only €3.85.
Modena is perfect for a day trip and easily combines with other destinations in Emilia. A must-see is the Torre della Ghirlandina, the famous bell tower offering panoramic views of the city.

COSA TROVERAI IN QUESTO POST:
One Day in Modena: Explore the City Center
As you walk through Modena, the city’s charm unfolds, starting at Piazza Grande, home to the 12th-century cathedral. Entry to the cathedral is free, and for €3, you can climb Torre della Ghirlandina. I loved having breakfast under the porticoes next to the cathedral, watching people stroll by on a Sunday morning. Heading to Piazza Mazzini, you’ll find the Synagogue, and then onto Piazza Roma, where the Military Academy stands as a city symbol.
The IAT (IAT, Informazione e Accoglienza Turistica di Modena) website offers various artistic, historical, and themed itineraries around Modena.

Parco Ducale Estense
You’ll love strolling through Parco Ducale Estense, a beautiful spot in any season. When I visited in November, the autumn colors painted a magical landscape, with the sun casting a warm glow. The park features a charming river crossed by a bridge and the Estense Palace, a vibrant building dating back to the 1600s.
The rear view of the “Temple” (Church of San Giovanni) is spectacular, with its imposing Greek cross architecture standing out among ancient trees and plants. It’s a truly special corner!
Visit Mercato Albinelli – Modena’s Central Market
Modena is a foodie’s paradise, and the most authentic place to experience it is Mercato Albinelli , where locals shop for fresh produce. Here, you’ll find everything from fresh fruits and vegetables to pasta, cured meats, and cheeses at affordable prices.
The market opens daily at 6:30 AM, except on Sundays, making it perfect for early risers!

Join a Balsamic Vinegar Tasting Tour
One day in Modena is not complete if you do not taste the typical balsamic vinegar of the city!
Modena is synonymous with balsamic vinegar, but the traditional kind is far superior to what you find in supermarkets.
Aged 12 to 25 years, DOP balsamic vinegar is approved by the Balsamic Vinegar Consortium of Modena. You can sample it in the city, even at the central market, but to fully understand the production process, visit a local Vinegar Cellar. For example, Acetaia Acetomodena offers guided tours just outside the city, ending with tastings of their high-quality products in a beautiful setting.
Enjoy a Traditional Lunch
Modena is famous for Osteria Francescana, one of the world’s top restaurants with three Michelin stars, serving traditional dishes with a modern twist. However, it requires booking months in advance.
Don’t worry; the city offers many excellent, more affordable options. I chose Trattoria Pomposa al Re gras, an authentic and budget-friendly alternative.
Here, I enjoyed dishes like tigelle with prosciutto and cheeses, tortellini in broth, tagliatelle al ragù, and tortelloni with balsamic vinegar. Reservations are recommended, especially on weekends.
Beyond the Center
There are plenty of other activities around Modena that can fill a couple of extra days. Visit the Enzo Ferrari Museum, tour a local Parmigiano Reggiano cheese factory, or take a scenic trip to Castelvetro di Modena, Vignola, or Formigine.
Check out the various nature and food tours departing from Modena, offering a fantastic way to experience the local culture, feast your eyes on beautiful landscapes, and enjoy delicious food!
