Gradara, the medieval village of love

by 26, Jun, 2020Italy, Marche

Gradara is one of the most beautiful medieval villages in Italy, famous for the tragic love story of Paolo and Francesca. Walking through its streets, you can feel the emotion of this ancient tale, as told by Dante Alighieri in The Divine Comedy. In Dante’s Inferno, their love and betrayal lead them to a tragic fate.

I’ve visited Gradara several times and it’s always a delight.
The village is usually crowded with tourists, but during a 2019 visit, it was so packed that I couldn’t see much.
However, in 2020, after travel restrictions were lifted, I returned and had the place to myself.
It was a peaceful experience, and I really enjoyed it. My plan was to walk around until I got hungry.

Walking around the medieval village

The village brings back the splendor of the 1200s. Visitors can fully immerse themselves in the medieval atmosphere, with souvenir shops disguised as old inns and iron cages for torture, entertaining both children and adults.

Gradara stretches from a main street up to the castle, with several narrow alleys branching off. The medieval town is beautiful, like a jewel! But be careful: the path to the castle is uphill, and the cobblestones can be slippery.
I almost rolled down the street, especially after the big meal I had earlier!

The history of Gradara

Gradara was at its peak during the medieval period. Inside the castle, you can find traces of the powerful families that ruled the town, like the Malatesta, Sforza, Della Rovere, and Marquis Mosca.

After the Malatesta family, the Sforza took control, followed by Lucrezia Borgia in 1494, who, at just 14 years old, was forced to separate from her husband Giovanni Sforza to follow her father Pope Alexander VI’s plans.
After a brief period under Cesare Borgia’s rule, the Della Rovere family took power. Over the centuries, many noble families ruled the town.

The Castle of “Paolo and Francesca”

This beautiful medieval village is best known for its historic Malatesta Castle, along with the fortified village and walls, which are a great example of medieval architecture. The castle stands 142 meters above sea level, on the border between Marche and Emilia Romagna, offering breathtaking views.

According to legend, Paolo Malatesta and Francesca da Polenta died here in September 1289, murdered by Paolo’s brother Gianciotto Malatesta out of jealousy.

The castle is open from Tuesday to Sunday, from 8:30 AM to 6:30 PM, and on Mondays from 8:30 AM to 12:30 PM, with an entrance fee of 8 euros. Guided tours can be booked online.

Amor, ch’a nullo amato amar perdona, mi prese del costui piacer sì forte, che, come vedi, ancor non m’abbandona.

From Legend to Today

This place is filled with history and has a unique emotional atmosphere. It is the setting of one of the most famous love stories in italian literature. It’s where the famous Divine Comedy’s Canto V takes place, telling the tragic story of Paolo and Francesca, two lovers condemned to Hell. Today, Gradara is known as the “Village of Love.”

The village has become a must-visit destination for lovers, not only for its poetic significance but also for its beautiful landscapes and well-preserved medieval structure, considered one of the most beautiful in Italy.

Where to Eat in Gradara

Many restaurants in the village are currently closed due to Covid regulations (2020).
However, I can recommend a great place I’ve visited often: Il Mastin Vecchio. It’s in an ancient building in the center, offering a meat menu for even the most discerning guests. On sunny days, dining on the outdoor terrace is lovely, with a great view of the walls.
The wine selection is excellent, and the atmosphere is elegant without being pretentious.

For a more casual meal, there are food trucks outside the walls serving piadinas and crescioni.
