Castelvetro di Modena in Autumn

Castelvetro is truly a magical place. This picturesque village is located in the heart of Emilia-Romagna, nestled between Modena and Bologna amidst the tranquility of the vineyards of the Modenese pre-Apennines. It’s a village full of towers and bell towers, and it dates back to 150 BC when the Romans turned it into a military outpost, a “Castrum” (military camp). That’s where the name “Castelvetro” originates from, derived from the Latin “Castrum Vetus” (old/ancient camp).

The beauty of this little village truly bursts forth in autumn, the perfect time to witness the splendor of the Lambrusco Grasparossa vineyards in full glory. The landscape is bathed in wonderful colors—yellow, green, red, and orange, putting on an incredible show!

This small town is a gem immersed in nature and has earned the prestigious “Bandiera Arancione” (Orange Flag), a quality tourist and environmental certification by the Italian Touring Club.

“The town stands out for its harmonious and well-preserved historic center, full of points of interest, with meticulously maintained urban spaces and green areas. Notable is the rich and diverse offer of events and festivals organized by the town throughout the year.”

What to see in Castelvetro di Modena

Things to See in Castelvetro di Modena

The main attractions are found in Piazza Roma, such as Palazzo Rinaldi (the Town Hall), the Clock Tower, and the Prison Tower, which was built relatively recently when all the buildings in the northern area of the castle were demolished to create an open space with views of the valley below.

Don’t miss the Levizzano Rangone Castle, which dominates the landscape. Built as a defensive stronghold against the Hungarians, it belonged to the church of Modena. Its Matildic tower is particularly distinctive and is famous for being connected to the Feudal Palace by an underground gallery, which you can visit with local guides.

Piazza Roma is also used for Renaissance reenactments. Every year, the Living Chess game takes place on its checkerboard pavement, and in odd years, the Festa a Castello is celebrated.

Events in Castelvetro in Autumn

In autumn, specifically in September, the Sagra dell’Uva e del Lambrusco (Grape and Lambrusco Festival) is celebrated, offering a fantastic opportunity to taste the characteristic Modenese wine and local delicacies such as Parmigiano Reggiano with Modena vinegar, tortelloni, crescentine (fried dough), rabbit alla cacciatora, cherry pies (from Vignola), and many other treats.

In October, the town celebrates the important recognition of the Bandiera Arancione.

Lastly, a visit to the ancient Acetaia Aceto Modena is a must. This place is fascinating and open to everyone, not just those who love this exquisite ingredient in Italian cuisine!
