The Delightful Gardens of Bologna: Discover the Green Side of the City

The Gardens of Bologna offer a green oasis in the heart of the city, with the Giardini Margherita as the main destination for nature lovers. In this article, we will also explore some CAI trails in the surrounding areas. Discover where you can relax in nature while in Bologna.

Bologna, with its ancient charm and vibrant cultural life, also hides extraordinary green spaces that provide a break from the city’s hustle and bustle. The Gardens of Bologna are not just places to relax but are genuine meeting points and showcases of scenic beauty.

In this guide, I’ll take you through some of the city’s most captivating green spaces, from the most famous to the lesser-known yet equally enchanting spots.

I Giardini Margherita

Talking about the Gardens of Bologna starts with the Giardini Margherita, the city’s most famous and frequented urban park. Located just outside Porta Santo Stefano, these gardens were inaugurated in 1879 and dedicated to Queen Margherita of Savoy. Spanning over 26 hectares, the park boasts lush lawns, picturesque lakes, and a wide variety of plants and trees.

Giardini Margherita is not just a place for walking or relaxing but also a hub of social life. In summer, the park hosts events, concerts, and markets. Year-round, you’ll find people of all ages jogging, practicing yoga, or simply enjoying a day outdoors.

One of the highlights is the Serre dei Giardini Margherita, now transformed into a trendy gathering spot and cultural venue, ideal for summer evenings.

A visit to Giardini Margherita is a must for anyone looking to explore Bologna’s green lungs.

Via del Genio

The walk begins on Via Felice Battaglia, a quiet side street off Via Saragozza, just outside the city gate. Following a dirt path, you’ll reach Via del Genio, which leads directly to the splendid Villa Ghigi Park.

The trail climbs slightly, requiring some effort, but it’s worth it. The paved road, with several bends, is quiet and lightly trafficked. This hidden but stunning path transitions from the city to the countryside. The roadside is lined with vegetation, and the sparse houses are surrounded by greenery. As you ascend, the view opens up to reveal a breathtaking panorama of the entire city. On clear days, you can see everything: historic districts, modern neighborhoods, monuments, and buildings forming a stunning tableau.

Villa Ghigi

For a closer connection with nature, Villa Ghigi Park is the perfect destination. Nestled in Bologna’s hills, just minutes from the city center, this park offers a bucolic landscape of meadows, orchards, and woods.

Villa Ghigi is ideal for a leisurely stroll, a picnic, or a more challenging hike. The park’s numerous trails allow visitors to explore local flora and fauna while enjoying scenic views of the city and surrounding hills.

In spring, blooming cherry trees and verdant grassy expanses make this spot particularly enchanting.

Villa Spada

Also located in the Saragozza district, Villa Spada Park is another gem among Bologna’s gardens. This 18th-century villa and its surrounding park sit on Bologna’s foothills, offering spectacular views of the city.

The park is renowned for its panoramic vistas and its hedge maze, one of the oldest in Italy. Walking along the paths of Villa Spada combines relaxation and nature: century-old trees, well-kept flowerbeds, and shaded corners create a magical atmosphere, perfect for those seeking peace or inspiration.

Additionally, the villa houses the Italian Women’s Library, another reason to visit this special place.

CAI Trail 914

From Villa Spada, you can start a delightful and easy CAI trail along Path 914, marked with the classic red-and-white trail markers.

The path leads out of the park, briefly follows a paved road, and continues to the Parco del Pellegrino. In the woods, trail markers are painted on tree trunks—easy to spot but requiring some attention.

From the peak of Parco del Pellegrino, you’ll enjoy a stunning view of the city! The trail ends on Via Montalbano, from where you can either continue to the Sanctuary of the Madonna of San Luca or head toward Parco Talon.

CAI Trail of the 300 Steps

Among Bologna’s green spaces, there’s room for adventure and unique panoramas. The CAI Trail of the 300 Steps is one of the most captivating routes for trekking and photography enthusiasts. Located near Villa Spada, this trail connects several panoramic points in Bologna’s hills.

The route includes a staircase immersed in nature, leading to a panoramic terrace where you can admire Bologna in all its beauty. It’s common to find artists and photographers capturing the light plays that transform the city below into a living painting. This CAI trail is a blend of physical activity and contemplation, perfect for those seeking something beyond the usual tourist routes.

Other Green Corners in Bologna

In addition to the well-known parks, Bologna offers numerous other green spaces worth visiting. The Parco della Montagnola, with its scenic staircase and weekly market, is one of the city’s oldest public gardens. The Parco Lunetta Gamberini, on the other hand, is great for families thanks to its play areas and sports fields.

For a quick escape from the city, consider Parco Cavaioni, nestled in Bologna’s hills, or Parco Talon, located on the road to Casalecchio.

The Gardens of Bologna are far more than simple green spaces—they are where the city and nature converge, offering residents and visitors opportunities to recharge and enjoy unique experiences.

From romantic strolls in the city to adventurous hikes, Bologna has something for every nature lover. So, put on your comfortable shoes, grab your camera, and get ready to explore the green heart of Bologna—its treasures are waiting to be discovered!
