Travel Photography: 12 Tips for Stunning Travel Photos and Instagram-Worthy Shots

Travel photography and exploration go hand in hand—here are some ideas and tips to help you capture stunning travel photos. Whether you’re passionate about photography or dreaming of becoming a photographer or blogger, this guide is a great starting point for your travel photography journey.
Today, mastering travel photography is easier than ever. Most smartphones come equipped with high-quality cameras, allowing you to take beautiful travel photos immediately without investing in expensive gear or learning the art of film development.
Learning travel photography is both fun and rewarding, but it also requires practice and technique—there’s so much to discover and master! Since I take countless photos during my travels, I’ve created this blog post to share my technical and creative travel photography tips. No matter what kind of camera you have, this guide will inspire you to get creative and capture amazing shots!

In the past, I would have loved to have received tips on how to take beautiful photos when travelling (for beginners).
If I look at some of my photos at the beginning of my Instagram journey, I think they could have been much better if I had known all these things!
Of course each model and brand of camera has its technical strengths, as do the lenses you want to combine with it, but what really makes a photo great is not the equipment but the subject and the good eye.
COSA TROVERAI IN QUESTO POST:
Clean Your Lens
Cleaning your lens might seem obvious, but you’d be surprised how crucial it is! I can’t count how many times I’ve ruined my travel photos because I overlooked this simple step. Think about your smartphone—stored in pockets or bags and touched countless times a day. Imagine the dust and particles that accumulate!
The same goes for camera lenses; they collect dust and lint constantly. No matter your device, always carry a small microfiber cloth and gently clean the lens before shooting.
Turn on Grid Lines
To create visually pleasing compositions in travel photography, think about what draws your eye to a great image. Where does it focus, and why?
Understanding basic composition theories can dramatically improve the impact of your travel photos.
Activate the 3×3 grid on your smartphone or camera. This divides your frame into nine parts and helps you follow the “rule of thirds,” a classic technique in photography that enhances dynamism by positioning subjects off-center.
Aligning elements with the grid ensures balance, directs the viewer’s eye, and adds depth. It’s an easy, effective way to elevate your Instagram travel shots.

Mini Guide to Composition
Have you ever heard of the golden ratio? This timeless principle, used in art for centuries, creates perfectly proportioned compositions that naturally draw the human eye.
Digital photography makes it easier to apply this technique by activating the 3×3 grid and following the rule of thirds. Place your subject along the lines or intersections to achieve an aesthetically balanced composition. While breaking this rule can sometimes work, most professional photographers use it to ensure visually appealing travel photos.
Play with Light
Light is the foundation of all photography. But what type of light works best for stunning travel photos? Personally, I prefer natural light because it’s versatile and free!
Since most travel photography happens outdoors, it’s essential to understand how and when to shoot in favorable conditions.
Midday sunlight often creates harsh, short shadows because the sun is directly overhead. While this might not seem ideal, it doesn’t mean you can’t take stunning photos during this time. Strong shadows can add drama, contrast, and bold definition to your images, particularly when photographing architecture, rugged landscapes, or textures.
Experiment with how the shadows interact with your subject to create unique, striking effects.

Watch the Shadows
Pay attention to your subject’s shadow as well as your own! Ensure your shadow doesn’t creep into the frame or worse—fall directly over the subject. While the midday sun can produce strong shadows, it can still work depending on the effect you want.

Shoot at Sunrise
As mentioned, sunrise and sunset provide the perfect natural light for travel photography. The sun near the horizon creates stunning effects, and shooting at dawn means fewer people around, avoiding distractions in your photos.
Every place feels different at sunrise—try it and see for yourself! Let me know how it goes.
Framing Within the Frame
I always aim to create depth in my travel photos. Using natural frames like plants or architectural elements in the foreground enhances the image by drawing attention to the subject while incorporating the surrounding environment.
This technique creates a layered effect, making your photos feel artistic and immersive.
The foreground may blur, but this intentional effect directs focus to the main subject while adding context.

Leverage Symmetry
On Instagram, some of the most admired travel photos feature symmetry. It’s everywhere in nature and architecture. Highlight symmetry in your images, whether it’s a doorway, a reflection on a calm lake, or a perfectly aligned path. The 3×3 grid can help you capture and align these elements seamlessly.
Use People to Tell a Story
Landscape shots can be beautiful on their own, but adding people brings context and a sense of scale. Whether they’re random passersby or someone you know, including people in your travel photography creates atmosphere and captures the vibrancy or serenity of a place.
“Look at What I See” Pose
Use your subject to guide the viewer into the image. One of my favorite poses involves turning my back to the camera, inviting the viewer to see the world through my eyes. It shifts focus from the person to the scenery, telling a story.
Most of my Instagram photos follow this concept, where the place takes center stage, and I become a secondary element.

Outfits and Color Contrasts
To stand out in travel photos, choose outfits that contrast with the background rather than blending in, unless that’s your intended effect. Bright colors that complement the scenery make images more striking.
Many travel bloggers on Instagram carefully plan their outfits to match the destination, weather, time of day, and season. Sometimes, a simple outfit change can transform a standard photo into an extraordinary one.
This works even at the beach: wear swimsuits that contrast beautifully with the blue sea and sandy shore.

Don’t Be Shy
“An embarrassing moment lasts a few seconds, but a great photo lasts forever!” I used to repeat this to myself when posing for travel photos in public. Over time, I’ve grown more confident, but the discomfort occasionally creeps in.
My advice? Seize the moment! You may never get another chance to take that shot. Ignore curious onlookers—they’ll forget about you in minutes. Take your time for the perfect shot but be mindful in crowded areas not to hold up others waiting for their turn.
Shoot in RAW
This tip is essential: always shoot in RAW format if your device allows it. RAW files capture more detail in highlights and shadows, making post-editing much easier. While they take up more storage than JPEGs, investing in an external hard drive is worth it to store your travel photos.
Back-Up Your Photos Daily
Always carry an external hard drive for backups. I travel with one for on-the-go storage and keep another at home for safekeeping.
Back up your photos midday and in the evening—better safe than sorry. Losing all your hard-earned travel photography would be devastating!
I hope this travel photography guide inspires you to take beautiful travel photos. Whether you’re exploring far-off destinations or just your hometown, grab your camera or phone, and start shooting!
