Magical Eggental in summer: the South Tyrol of wonders!
In the heart of the Dolomites, Eggental is secretly nestled among some of the most breathtaking mountains: Latemar and Catinaccio.
But there’s more. The colors, the scents, the landscapes. Let your dreams come to life as you marvel at turquoise lakes and rugged rock formations—it’s a true natural paradise.
Picture yourself wandering through vast meadows in bloom, your eyes fixed on the sunlit peaks, with the gentle sound of cowbells in the distance. Eggental is the perfect destination for every kind of traveler: hikers, spa lovers, foodies, animal enthusiasts, and so much more. It’s one of those places where you’ll find everything you need—and where you’ll truly find yourself.
The perfect place to unplug and reconnect with your inner self.

From the very first miles of the drive, Eggental had me hooked.
Maybe it’s because it’s far less touristy than nearby Val di Fassa or Val di Fiemme, or maybe it was just my sheer excitement for a mountain getaway, but one thing’s for sure—you’re immediately welcomed by the beauty of this land, packed with hidden wonders: fairy-tale landscapes, hotels fit for royalty, delicious traditional dishes, pristine roads, and the warm, hospitable nature of the locals. Time simply flies here!
COSA TROVERAI IN QUESTO POST:
Eggental: General Information
We spent three days in Eggental, and it was one of the best vacations ever!
Eggental is located in the southwestern part of the Dolomites, in South Tyrol, between the Latemar and Catinaccio mountains, just 20 km from Bolzano. It stretches across the municipalities of Nova Levante, Nova Ponente, Collepietra, Carezza, Obereggen, Ega, and Monte San Pietro.
This region is perfect for family vacations all year round. It boasts stunning lakes, numerous hiking trails leading to incredible spots, and, of course, a wide range of winter sports activities.
Here’s what you can expect: more than 200 km of mountain bike trails, ranging from easy to challenging, plus countless hiking trails, via ferratas, and high-altitude trekking routes. But if sports aren’t your thing, you’ll still be enchanted by the traditional alpine huts and farmhouses, not to mention the UNESCO-listed landscapes.

The Dolomites: A UNESCO Natural Heritage Site
UNESCO has recognized the Dolomites, including Rosengarten and Latemar, as a “Natural World Heritage Site.”
The Latemar mountain range isn’t exactly a chain—it’s circular in shape and composed of sedimentary rock featuring distinct layers. Within these layers, you can even find fossilized coral, remnants of an ancient sea dating back to the Triassic period.
The name Latemar comes from the Ladin phrase “cresta de Lac-te-mara,” meaning “ridge of Lake Carezza,” as its peaks are beautifully reflected in the lake’s waters.

Lake Carezza
Carezza is probably one of the most photographed spots in South Tyrol—and an absolute must-see if you’re in the area! Lake Carezza is a picture-perfect scene, so stunning that no painting could ever do it justice.
Located at 1,520 meters above sea level, this relatively small lake offers a truly breathtaking sight when the weather is clear. The water shifts in shades from deep emerald green to the lightest, most crystalline blue, mirroring the majestic peaks of Latemar.
On sunny days, it’s a spectacular sight. In fact, as soon as we approached it from the road, I was already in awe—even with trees and guardrails partially blocking my view! Read the Legend of Carezza lake!

Useful Information for Your Visit
A protective fence surrounds the lake, so you can’t walk right up to it. However, a dedicated viewing platform allows you to take in the full beauty of the scenery.
A super easy hiking trail circles the lake, following the fence line. It takes about 20 minutes to complete, and you can park in the paid lot across the road (€1 per hour). There, you’ll also find shops, a café, and a spotless public restroom.
We visited on a partly cloudy day, with mist covering the peaks—but even then, the scene was pure magic!
Hiking in the Dolomites of Eggental
Once you reach the mountains, it’s impossible to look away. The peaks are stunning at every hour of the day, offering endless views and unforgettable moments. One thing’s for sure—there’s an irresistible urge to climb higher, where the Dolomites kiss the sky, amid lush plateaus and clear blue horizons.
Now, I wouldn’t call myself a seasoned hiker, but here, there are trails for everyone, with over 500 km of well-marked paths catering to all fitness levels. Just step onto the trail, take in the untouched nature, and let the unforgettable scenery of mountain huts, mountain passes, and postcard-perfect views sink in.
For an easier ascent, you can use the six summer lifts of Carezza Dolomites with a single day pass.
We opted for an easy hike from Hotel Moseralm to Heinzen Alm, a 7.4 km circular route that we completed in about 2.5 hours.

Trekking with Llamas and Alpacas
On our first day in Eggental, we visited Dieter and Denise at their stunning high-altitude farm, Prennergut, in Nova Levante.
During the summer, Prennergut organizes hikes with alpacas and llamas for both adults and kids. The moment I saw a picture of those adorable alpacas, it was love at first sight—I just had to book an excursion with them!
The experience was truly special. Looking back at the photos of my new best friend, Wascò, still makes me smile. They say you can’t look into an alpaca’s eyes without falling in love… and it’s so true!
Tyrolean cooking class
Anna-Maria was my teacher of traditional Tyrolean recipes for a day in the kitchen of her beautiful traditional Kronlechnerhof farmhouse: sloping roof, vegetable garden, and greenhouse where she grows REAL BIO vegetables, cows, chickens, pigs, cats wandering around the garden looking for the perfect spot for a nap and typical South Tyrolean atmosphere.
The very sweet Anna-Maria gathered ingredients from the garden and then prepared traditional recipes together: dumplings of three different types, Tyrolean krapfen, and the most colorful salad I have ever seen!

Where to stay in Eggental: our favorite hotel, the Moseralm
We came here not only to trek in the Dolomites but also to indulge in relaxation and romance. We couldn’t have found better. We slept 2 nights in Carezza, a few kilometers up the lake, specifically at the Moseralm Dolomites Resort Spa. (book here)
The highlight of our vacation: a 4-star Superior hotel right in the heart of an enchanted valley, right next to one of Carezza’s chairlifts.
Nothing is left to chance here, starting with our room, which is a daydream, with a small terrace overlooking Catinaccio!
Wellness center, pools with mountain views, a delicious restaurant and the customary -but by no means taken for granted- smiles!

After this unforgettable trip, I can say with certainty: I love the warm hospitality of South Tyrol, and I absolutely adore Eggental!
