To start your tour of Gemona, I highly recommend visiting the historic center. The main square, Piazza del Duomo, is surrounded by historic buildings and offers a stunning view of the town. Here, you’ll find the Cathedral of Santa Maria Assunta, an imposing religious structure with a Baroque-style facade. Inside, the cathedral is mesmerizing, featuring magnificent frescoes and exquisite works of art.

Besides the Cathedral of Santa Maria Assunta in Gemona, make sure to visit the Church of San Pietro, also known as the Church of Saints Peter and Paul. Today, many of the historical buildings have been beautifully restored, blending various architectural styles. Beyond the physical reconstruction, the earthquake also left a lasting emotional impact on the town and its people.

Gemona continues to remember that tragic event through various monuments and memorials scattered throughout the town, as well as a permanent exhibition called “1976 – Fragments of Memory” This moving exhibition focuses on the events of May 6, 1976, through photographic, audio, and video documentation.

During the festival weekend, the streets and squares of Gemona’s historic center are transformed into a lively medieval setting, recreating the culture and lifestyle of that era.

Visitors can enjoy costumed parades, knightly tournaments, theatrical performances, medieval music and dances, traditional artisans showcasing their crafts, medieval markets selling local products, and much more.

At night, the public lighting is turned off, and the entire town—dressed in medieval attire—is illuminated by torches and candles, creating a romantic and truly authentic atmosphere!
