Discover Monselice and the Euganean Hills

Monselice, an enchanting town located in the Veneto region of Italy, represents an authentic hidden treasure for lovers of history, art, and nature. Surrounded by Euganean hills and dominated by the majestic Rocca, Monselice offers a unique combination of architectural beauty, breathtaking scenery and a rich cultural heritage.
Mid-July 2023: The heat leaves no respite for Italy, which over the weekend flocks to the nearest shores desperate for some fresh air. ME no.
While everyone heads to the Adriatic coast, I take the Bologna-Padua north and head inland to the Veneto region.
I am not crazy, I have a plan. A Saturday at a Resort at the Terme Euganee, among pools, massages and thermal waters, and on Sunday a little trip of the kind I like: those where you can calmly enjoy your destination without too many people around.
And indeed, as it was meant to be, Monselice on Sunday was really deserted!
Accomplicated by the 40°C, felt 60, the town was empty but with many local businesses open, such as the little restaurant where we immediately had lunch once we arrived.
Then, off to explore!
This Monselice travel guide will take you through its most interesting attractions and show you why this destination is worth a visit.
COSA TROVERAI IN QUESTO POST:
Monselice Castle
In the heart of the city is Monselice Castle, a fascinating medieval building.
This well-preserved castle represents an important testimony to the military architecture of the time. Explore its towers, courtyards and ornate halls, and be transported back in time. During the summer, the castle often hosts cultural events, such as concerts and art exhibitions.

Historic center
Getting lost in the narrow streets of Monselice’s historic center is a fascinating experience. Admire the elegant Renaissance palaces, historic churches, and charming alleys winding along the hillside. Visit Piazza Mazzini, the beating heart of the city, and enjoy the authentic atmosphere. Along the main street, you will also find traditional stores, cozy cafes and restaurants offering local specialties.

Fortress of Monselice
A good starting point for exploring Monselice is the Rocca, an ancient fortress that dominates the entire town. Built in the 12th century, the Rocca offers breathtaking panoramic views of the city and surrounding countryside. Inside, you can visit the Rocca Museum, which houses an extensive collection of weapons, armor and historical artifacts. Don’t miss the opportunity to walk along the walls of the Rocca to admire the unique view.

Shrine of the Seven Churches
Located on a scenic hillside, the Sanctuary of the Seven Churches is a sacred place of great importance. This religious complex consists of seven churches, each dedicated to a different saint. In addition to its religious significance, the shrine offers spectacular views of the city and its surroundings. Take a walk among the churches, admire the frescoes and enjoy the spiritual quiet of the place.

Euganean Hills Regional Park
If you have a desire to explore the nature surrounding Monselice, we recommend a visit to the Euganean Hills Regional Park. This park, located nearby, is a true paradise for those who love hiking, biking, and observing flora and fauna. Explore trails through lush forests, vineyards and ancient Roman ruins. Don’t forget to visit the nearby spa resorts, famous for their healing properties.

What to eat in Monselice
Monselice and the Veneto region offer a variety of traditional dishes that will allow you to savor the local cuisine.
Here are some typical foods to try here:
Risi e Bisi: This dish is a Veneto specialty. It consists of a creamy soup made with rice and fresh peas. It is a seasonal dish prepared during spring, when peas are at their peak of freshness and flavor.
Bigoli all’anatra: Bigoli is a fresh, homemade pasta similar to spaghetti but thicker. In Monselice, it is often served with a rich duck sauce. Duck meat is slow-cooked with flavorings and spices to create a flavorful sauce that perfectly matches the texture of bigoli.

Tressel Cake: As far as desserts go, the Tressel Cake is a delicacy not to be missed. It is a traditional cake made with almonds, sugar and eggs. Its soft texture and delicate flavor make it perfect to accompany coffee or a cup of tea.
Local wines: Don’t forget to accompany your meals with a good glass of local wine. The Veneto region is renowned for producing quality wines, such as Soave, Valpolicella, and Prosecco. Be sure to sample local wines to complete your dining experience in Monselice.
During your visit, look for local restaurants and taverns that offer these regional specialties to fully savor Monselice’s traditional cuisine.
