1 day in Langhirano: from Torrechiara Castle to Prosciutto di Parma

Visiting Langhirano: Emilia-Romagna is a region that always offers wonderful discoveries, and Langhirano is undoubtedly one of those gems waiting to be explored in all its facets.
Located in the province of Parma, Langhirano is truly a treasure chest brimming with things to see and do, making it the perfect destination for a slow tourism weekend.
On a sunny Saturday in February, we embarked on this small adventure among the rolling hills of Parma. We immersed ourselves in its fairytale-like landscapes, surrounded by nature and rows of vineyards, and indulged in the many local delicacies.
Below, I’ll share everything there is to see and do when visiting Langhirano, so you can spend an unforgettable day exploring the beauty of this hidden gem and its extraordinary gastronomy!
COSA TROVERAI IN QUESTO POST:
Prosciutto di Parma Museum
Langhirano is without a doubt the homeland of the famous Prosciutto di Parma, and it is here that the Prosciutto di Parma Museum was established. As part of the Food Museums network, it is a must-visit stop for any lover of authentic cuisine!
Much like a moth is drawn to light, I was captivated by this temple of Parma’s salumi tradition and explored all eight sections.
The museum offers a cultural journey through the ancient history, technical evolution, curiosities, and culinary applications of Prosciutto di Parma, from its origins to its current production methods.
Through evocative images, historic tools, and documents, the visit becomes an engaging and immersive experience in the vast world of this iconic Italian gastronomic excellence.
The experience concludes on a delicious note, with a tasting of Prosciutto and other local culinary specialties at the museum’s adjacent restaurant.

Torrechiara Castle
Torrechiara Castle towers over a breathtaking landscape near Langhirano, and with its grandeur, massive stone towers, and unmistakable charm, it embodies the magic of the late medieval period.
Walking through the tiny village and ascending to its imposing entrance is a truly enchanting experience. Built between 1448 and 1460 by Pier Maria Rossi, the castle was dedicated to his beloved Bianca Pellegrini, protagonists of a legendary love story that echoes through every corner.
Considered one of the best-preserved castles in Italy, it has served as a setting for historical films and even captured the attention of Hollywood.

When visiting Langhirano, be sure to book a guided tour to explore the corridors, halls, honor courtyard, and admire the frescoed cycles, including the famous and stunning Golden Chamber in the international Gothic or courtly Gothic style of the Bembo school.
Torrechiara Castle is open every day except Monday. For details and ticket prices, visit www.portaletorrechiara.it.

The Langhirano Art Trail
The Langhirano Art Trail, inaugurated in 2020, is a scenic route that unfolds along two axes: north to south and east to west, connecting the Abbey of Santa Maria della Neve to Torrechiara Castle.
This enchanting 12-kilometer trail winds through vineyards and waterways, enriched by ten contemporary art installations, with the picturesque Torrechiara Castle providing a stunning backdrop. The route is suitable for everyone, from families to experienced hikers.

Benedictine Abbey of Santa Maria della Neve
The Abbey of Santa Maria della Neve, commissioned in 1471 by Pier Maria Rossi and dedicated to Santa Maria della Neve, is located near the Parma stream, close to the village of Torrechiara.
Entering the abbey, you’ll find yourself in a beautiful cloister with colonnades and arches on all four sides. Inside the exquisitely decorated church, there is a single nave with two chapels on the right.
The highlight, in my opinion, is the 18th-century Belvedere: a semicircular wrought-iron terrace with a finely frescoed ceiling, offering a breathtaking 180° view of the surrounding landscape and the Parma stream. Truly unforgettable!
Inside the abbey, you’ll also find a small shop selling various cosmetic products made using ancient recipes and natural ingredients, reinterpreted and adapted by the Benedictine monks.

Additional Useful Information About Langhirano
Visiting Langhirano was an all-encompassing experience that blended the culture and the traditions of Emilia-Romagna.
The views from the Abbey and the Castle added a magical touch to my trip, but it was the encounters with the locals – united by their deep passion for their gastronomic heritage – and the incomparable flavors of the typical products that made my journey truly unforgettable!
