During 2020 and 2021, with travel restrictions in place, I had the chance to discover hidden gems around Bologna that I had previously overlooked. My love for travel led me to explore nearby destinations, which did not disappoint in terms of charm, history, and fascinating discoveries.

These villages offer the perfect mix of history, culture, and breathtaking landscapes. They are also ideal for those who love taking stunning photos to share or keep as memories. If you’re looking for a getaway that allows you to escape the hustle and bustle of the city, the medieval villages near Bologna are the perfect choice.

La Scola: A Journey Back in Time

Nestled in the Bolognese hills, La Scola is a small medieval village that seems frozen in time. Its stone houses, towers, and quiet alleys create the perfect setting for history lovers and photography enthusiasts. Walking through its narrow streets feels like stepping into the past, with enchanting corners and breathtaking views.

Perfect for a relaxing Sunday dedicated to discovering a lesser-known side of Bologna.

Dozza Imolese: The Painted Village

Dozza is one of the most fascinating villages close to Bologna, famous for its painted walls. The facades of the houses are true works of art, thanks to the street art festival that brings the village to life every year. Every corner of Dozza holds a surprise: vibrant colors, incredible murals, and a unique atmosphere. It’s the perfect place for creative photography lovers who want to add an artistic touch to their day trip.

And how can I not mention La Rocca Sforzesca di Dozza? This majestic medieval castle still retains its original structure and houses the “Enoteca dell’Emilia-Romagna,” where you can taste excellent regional wines.

For art lovers and landscape photographers, Grizzana Morandi is a small paradise. This village inspired many artists, including Giorgio Morandi, who spent his summers here. 
The surrounding hills offer perfect scenery for a relaxing and exploratory getaway.

Not far away, you’ll find the real gem of this area: Rocchetta Mattei, the most unique castle in Italy. Recently restored and open to the public for guided tours, Rocchetta Mattei takes you inside the mind of its eccentric creator, offering a truly dreamlike experience!

Bazzano: A Mix of History and Culture

Located in Valsamoggia, just a short distance from Bologna, Bazzano is another village worth discovering. Its landmark is the Rocca dei Bentivoglio, a medieval fortress that dominates the town center and offers an incredible panoramic view.

If you love architectural photography and breathtaking landscapes, Bazzano is the place for you. Stroll through its cobbled streets, uncover its history, and capture every detail with your camera. 
Not far from Bazzano, I highly recommend a stop at the beautiful Monteveglio Abbey Regional Park—a true architectural and natural gem!

Castelvetro: Among Vineyards and Towers

Famous for its vineyards and Lambrusco wine production, Castelvetro is the perfect village for a Sunday dedicated to tradition and fine wine. The historic center, with its towers and cobbled streets, offers an incredible view of the surrounding hills, especially in autumn when the landscape turns into a warm-colored painting!

Castelvetro is a small village that can be explored in no time, but it certainly doesn’t disappoint in terms of charm.

Don’t forget to take some photos at Piazzale della Dama, a uniquely shaped square with a life-sized checkers board painted on the ground. This square is not only the heart of the village but also offers breathtaking views over the town and the vibrant hills.

Also worth mentioning is Levizzano Rangone, a tiny enchanting village with a stunning castle rising among the vineyards, just 5 km from Castelvetro!
