Located among the gentle hills of Valsamoggia, right between Bologna and Modena, Monteveglio is one of those small medieval villages that have preserved their magic intact, making it perfect for a day trip in Emilia-Romagna. Discover Monteveglio Abbey
If, like me, you love small villages where medieval charm is still captivating, then Monteveglio will surely win you over with its authenticity. The cobbled streets, the ancient Monteveglio Abbey (Abbey of St. Mary of the Assumption), and the green, unspoiled landscape make it an ideal place for a day immersed in history and nature, far from the city chaos. Walking here feels like stepping back in time, surrounded by ancient walls and breathtaking views of the Emilian hills.
In this article, we will explore Monteveglio together, the Abbey, and the hidden treasures of its surroundings, including some nearby villages that add even more charm to this excursion.
You will discover why a visit to Monteveglio is a unique opportunity to rejuvenate and experience the most authentic beauty of hidden Italy, without giving up delicious food and unforgettable landscapes.

COSA TROVERAI IN QUESTO POST:
The history of Monteveglio Abbey of St. Mary
Monteveglio boasts ancient roots, dating back to the Etruscan period. However, it was during the medieval era that the village reached its peak importance, becoming a strategic point between Bologna and Modena. Its hillside position made it easily defensible, and in fact, during the Middle Ages, it was often at the center of territorial disputes.
The true jewel of Monteveglio is the Abbey of St. Mary of the Assumption, an ancient church dating back to the 11th century. Walking within the Abbey’s walls is like stepping into a story; the first time I entered its interior and the cloister, it immediately reminded me of the setting of The Name of the Rose. Its Romanesque architecture is simple yet imposing, and the tranquility of the place invites you to take a moment of silence and reflection.
Inside, you can admire the beauty of Romanesque sculptures and ancient paintings, which transport you back to a time when Monteveglio was a spiritual and cultural reference point for the region.

Monteveglio between nature and spirituality
One of the things I love about Monteveglio is its perfect blend of history and nature. The Abbey is located within the Regional Park of the Abbey of Monteveglio, a protected natural area that extends over 900 hectares.
After visiting the Abbey, I recommend venturing on one of the many walking trails that start right from the village. Paths immersed in greenery, centuries-old oak trees, and breathtaking panoramas accompany you along the way.
You don’t need to be an expert hiker to enjoy the beauty of these places: there are trails of varying difficulty, suitable for all ages and all kinds of explorers… even for less experienced ones, like me.

I find that the view of the hills from above, especially at sunset, is truly enchanting: that sense of peace and isolation allows you to completely unplug and recharge in contact with nature.
My advice is, first of all, to wear comfortable shoes and bring a camera to capture glimpses of the village and the landscapes: you will have a natural painting in front of you, with rolling hills that change from green to gold depending on the season.
Why Monteveglio is an unmissable day trip
Monteveglio is not just a destination; it is an invitation to immerse yourself in the discreet and timeless beauty of the Emilian hills.
Monteveglio is an ideal spot for a day trip because it has everything one could wish for in a short getaway: history, nature, and irresistible cuisine. Here, you can spend a few hours in total relaxation, far from the urban chaos, without the need for extensive planning.
It is the perfect place for those seeking an authentic and non-touristy experience, where you can appreciate the simplicity and beauty of life in contact with nature. Moreover, its proximity to Bologna and Modena makes it easily accessible by car, ideal for a stress-free day.

Where to eat in Monteveglio
After a walk through the hills, there’s nothing better than sitting down to enjoy the local cuisine. Near Monteveglio, I recommend “Trattoria Del Borgo”, a cozy restaurant that offers rustic dishes with a unique touch, made with excellent local ingredients.
Their first courses are an absolute must-try, and you’ll be spoiled for choice. The restaurant is exactly the kind of place you’d expect in a village like Monteveglio: a simple yet genuine atmosphere, where you will certainly eat very well and feel right at home.

Close to Monteveglio: Savignano sul Panaro and Spilamberto
If you still have time and the desire to explore, I recommend continuing your trip towards Savignano sul Panaro and Spilamberto. Savignano sul Panaro is a small village rich in history, with a medieval fortress that offers a spectacular view of the surrounding hills. Walking through its streets truly feels like stepping into a vintage postcard, with some examples of Romanesque art in the local churches telling stories of the past.
Spilamberto, on the other hand, is known for the Traditional Balsamic Vinegar Museum, a real gem for those who want to discover the production of this precious condiment, a true pride of the Modenese tradition.
For a complete insight into these two destinations, I leave the word to Gabriele from Italia Ignota, who has visited and described in detail the wonders of Savignano and Spilamberto in his articles.
Monteveglio Abbey is a small gem to visit close to Bologna that has so much to offer despite its small size. The history of the Abbey, the beauty of the surrounding hills, and the opportunity to savor genuine dishes make this village an ideal destination for those who want to discover the authenticity of the region and the Valsamoggia territory.
All that’s left is for you to plan your visit and let yourself be enchanted by Monteveglio and its surroundings.
