After a stroll through the charming village streets of Lari, we dedicated a Sunday entirely to ourselves, heading to Casciana Terme with our hearts set on a day of relaxation and well-being. The spring sunshine was so warm and bright it felt like midsummer: the air smelled of flowers, and the idea of immersing ourselves in thermal water felt like the perfect way to end the weekend.

In this article, I’m sharing my personal experience from one of the most relaxing days of the year: outdoor pools, a revitalizing massage, an indulgent brunch, and the wonderful sensation of releasing stress, one deep breath at a time. Here’s why you should treat yourself to a day (or even a weekend!) at Casciana Thermal Baths.

What to Do in Casciana Terme

Casciana Terme is a hidden gem nestled in the Valdera hills of Pisa province. It’s not one of the headline destinations…and that’s exactly why it stays with you: for its authenticity, relaxed vibe, and the simple beauty that embraces you gently.
From the moment you arrive and are greeted by tree-lined avenues and Liberty-style buildings, a quiet elegance fills the air. Casciana Terme is the ideal destination for those seeking wellness in Tuscany without tourists, offering an intimate and authentic setting where every detail encourages you to slow down, breathe, and recharge.

Casciana Thermal Baths: A Peaceful Oasis

The beating heart of this retreat is undeniably the Casciana Thermal Baths. With roots that stretch back to Roman times and recognition from the era of Countess Matilda of Canossa, these baths represent one of Tuscany’s most fascinating historical thermal centers. A romantic legend says that the countess discovered the healing powers of the water after seeing an elderly blackbird restored by repeatedly bathing in a hot spring. Inspired, she transformed this natural wonder into a center for healing and rest.

Today, just like back then, the spring water—known as Mathelda Water—continues to deliver real benefits. Flowing naturally at a consistent 35.7°C (96.3°F), it’s classified as a bicarbonate‑sulfate‑calcium water enriched with finely balanced minerals. It’s used to treat arthritis, rheumatism, and sciatica, and supports vascular, dermatological, inhalation therapies, and modern motor rehabilitation.

A Full Day of Wellness in Tuscany

We spent an entire day soaking in outdoor pools surrounded by the lush greenery of the thermal park. There’s something profoundly restorative about floating in Mathelda Water, watching the delicate steam rise and feeling your skin soften and muscles unwind. In minutes, I had forgotten all the tension I’d been carrying.

Casciana Thermal Baths are a sanctuary in Tuscany without tourists—a place where time stretches and wellness replaces routine. Perfect for a solo retreat or a couples’ getaway.

Brunch with a View… in a Bathrobe

After enjoying the pools, hunger struck—and what better finale than brunch? We chose the Gran Caffè delle Terme, located just steps from the pools. The cherry on top? You can arrive in your bathrobe, without even leaving the thermal area. It feels like a mini luxury, like being on vacation without boarding a plane.

The brunch selection was generous: pancakes, waffles, smoked salmon bagels, yogurt with nuts, scrambled eggs with bacon, and a refreshing cocktail. All prepared with care and high-quality ingredients—perfect for a place where simplicity equals excellence. Eating slowly, in the sunshine, made the experience even more memorable—a beautiful embodiment of wellness in Tuscany.

Thermal Cures in Casciana

Thermal Cures in Casciana go beyond relaxation. The spa offers specialized treatments blending traditional thermal therapy and modern medical techniques: mud therapy, hydromassage with underwater jets, inhalation treatments, and even drinking the thermal water to support liver function and metabolism. Rich in carbon dioxide, the water also boosts circulation and promotes healthy venous return.

Each cream and oil carries the scent of relaxation and authentic beauty. It’s an experience that enhances both your skin and your spirit.

I treated myself to a 25-minute massage with Alessandra—it was short but thoroughly effective. She melted away every tension point, restoring a sense of lightness. Walking out, I felt completely rejuvenated, as if I’d slept for eight solid hours!
