It’s still a relatively undiscovered destination, but that’s exactly what makes it so incredibly fascinating. Perfect for those seeking authentic experiences away from the crowds, Bosnia always manages to surprise.

During my travels, I discovered a country full of contrasts: from the Ottoman atmosphere of Sarajevo to the iconic bridges of Mostar, all the way to wild mountains and spectacular waterfalls. Despite its small size, it offers endless possibilities—especially for those looking to plan itineraries in Bosnia that combine culture, nature, and local traditions.

What to know before you go

Planning a trip here is easier than you might think. Bosnia is easily accessible from Italy, and Bosnia by car is truly beautiful, perfect for a road trip. The main roads are in good condition, although in some more rural areas they can be a bit rough.

An important aspect to keep in mind is the currency: the euro is not used here. The official currency is the Bosnia and Herzegovina Convertible Mark (BAM). In many tourist areas you can still pay in euros, but change is almost always given in the local currency, so it’s a good idea to carry some cash.

As for documents, I recommend bringing your passport, some border guards can be quite strict!

Renting a car gives you the freedom to reach more remote areas, and while the main roads are generally in good condition, some rural routes can be a bit rough—nothing that takes away from the adventure.
