Traveling in Bosnia: a surprising journey

When I think of Bosnia, what comes to mind is a unique blend of cultures, surprising landscapes, and a warm, genuine hospitality. It’s still a relatively undiscovered destination, but that’s exactly what makes it so incredibly fascinating. Perfect for those seeking authentic experiences away from the crowds, Bosnia always manages to surprise.

During my travels, I discovered a country full of contrasts: from the Ottoman atmosphere of Sarajevo to the iconic bridges of Mostar, all the way to wild mountains and spectacular waterfalls. Despite its small size, it offers endless possibilities—especially for those looking to plan itineraries in Bosnia that combine culture, nature, and local traditions.

What to know before you go

Planning a trip here is easier than you might think. Bosnia is easily accessible from Italy, and Bosnia by car is truly beautiful, perfect for a road trip. The main roads are in good condition, although in some more rural areas they can be a bit rough.

An important aspect to keep in mind is the currency: the euro is not used here. The official currency is the Bosnia and Herzegovina Convertible Mark (BAM). In many tourist areas you can still pay in euros, but change is almost always given in the local currency, so it’s a good idea to carry some cash.

As for documents, I recommend bringing your passport, some border guards can be quite strict!

What to see: the main tourist destinations

Among the must-see stops is definitely Sarajevo, a city that tells complex yet fascinating stories, where mosques, churches, and synagogues stand just a short walk from each other. Then there’s Mostar, with its famous bridge and a historic center that feels frozen in time.

Nature lovers will be in their element: from the Kravica waterfalls to lesser-known mountain landscapes, perfect for hiking and moments of pure relaxation.

If you’re thinking about going, keep in mind that there are plenty of itinerary options, suitable for both short trips and more in-depth explorations.

When to visit Bosnia and Herzegovina

The best time to visit depends on the kind of trip you’re looking for. Spring and summer are ideal for exploring cities and nature, while autumn offers stunning colors and a more peaceful atmosphere. Winter also has its own charm, especially in the mountainous areas.

Getting around is quite easy: Bosnia by car is one of the best ways to explore the country, especially if you’re planning a road trip. Renting a car gives you the freedom to reach more remote areas, and while the main roads are generally in good condition, some rural routes can be a bit rough—nothing that takes away from the adventure.

In every season, visiting Bosnia will surprise you. It’s affordable, authentic, and still relatively undiscovered—perfect for those who love exploring destinations off the beaten path
